My Philosophy: Fix the Root Cause, Not the Symptom

I'm Nancy Dehra, a certified nutritionist  from Precision Nutrition (Canada) and advanced functional nutrition certification from iThrive. I also hold a Post Graduate diploma in Functional Nutrition from IGMPI India. I'm registered with Skill India and hold membership with the Indian Association of Functional Medicine (IAFM). Also pursuing my course with IFM(The Institute for Functional Medicine)

I strongly believe in treating the root cause, not just the symptom sitting on top of it.

Think about the last time you had stomach pain, or that foggy, can't-think-straight feeling. You went to the doctor. You took the medicine. The symptom went away — and you moved on, never once asking why it happened in the first place.

That's the pattern most of us are trained into. We're taught that medication treats the problem. It doesn't. Medication manages a symptom. It doesn't ask why your gut is inflamed, why your brain is foggy, or why your body picked that moment to send up a flare.

Here's what most people don't realise: your body has been sending you signals long before any diagnosis shows up on paper. Fatigue, bloating, brain fog, mood changes, skin issues, disrupted sleep — none of these are random. They're your body's early warning system. But because we're never taught to question the signal, we only learn to silence it.

How I Found the Missing Puzzle Piece?

I didn't start out in functional nutrition. I started as a dietitian — trained in the traditional model of calories, macros, and meal plans. For years, I worked with clients the way I was taught: calculate their needs, build the plan, watch the scale.

And it worked. People lost weight.

But then something kept happening that the textbooks never explained. Clients would lose the weight — and months later, it would come back. Sometimes more than before. And the ones who "succeeded" on paper would still come to me exhausted, foggy, bloated, moody, sleeping badly — despite hitting every number on their plan.

That contradiction sat with me. If the plan worked, why weren't they actually well? Why did the weight always find its way back? Why did people who looked "healthy" by every conventional marker still feel like something was wrong?

That question became the missing puzzle piece that pulled me out of traditional dietetics and into functional nutrition. I realized the plan was never the problem — the starting point was. We were treating the outcome (weight, symptoms) instead of asking what was driving it in the first place: gut health, hormone balance, inflammation, thyroid function, nutrient status, stress load.

What changed everything for me was understanding this — when health markers are caught in real time, long before they become a diagnosis, you can actually prevent disease instead of just reacting to it. That idea is what made me pursue functional nutrition seriously, and it's the lens I've worked through ever since.

Now, before I reach for a medicine or brush off a symptom, I ask one question first: what's the root? That's the exact question I bring into every client relationship. Not "how do we mask this," but "what is this trying to tell us, and what do we need to fix at the source."
